CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
William hadn't planned on showing Charles his burns so soon, but after what he'd heard, it was the perfect time. They were both opening up and letting the other into a part of their lives they didn't share with others.
What Charles said about his past broke his heart. He hated every person who ever caused him pain, and wanted to take revenge on all of them, but now wasn't the time to think about that. He needed to be here for Charles. Show him that his feelings didn't change and he still wanted to be with him.
It was now time to let Charles into his past. He leaned against the counter beside Charles. "I was going to tell you in time, but since we are taking things so slow, there really wasn't a reason to bring it up yet. My past is nowhere as horrific as yours, but there are things you need to know."
Charles stared at him. "What do you mean?"
William stepped away from the counter, turning to face Charles. "It's easier if I just show you." He slowly reached up and started to unbutton his shirt.
Charles's eyes went wide.
Worried that Charles was upset he was undressing, he shook his head. "I need to remove my shirt to show you. I promise, it's nothing more." He continued to unbutton his shirt, stopping when it hung open. "There was an accident when I was 14. My friend, Kyle and I were in an old cabin on the back of my dad's property. It was our hideout. We would go there and just hang out. Some kids have tree houses and stuff, Kyle and I had the cabin. It wasn't very big. Just one room. More of a shed really. Anyway, one day we went out there. It was cooler, winter was just around the corner. There was a little propane heater that my dad had given me to put in there. I'd used it all the time. Hell, he used it for years before giving it to me. Like every other time, we went to light the heater. Kyle hit the ignite button and…" William paused, closing his eyes for a minute. "There was an explosion. It blew the whole cabin to pieces. I had my back to Kyle and one minute I was standing there looking at some pocket knife my dad had given me, and the next, I was flying through the air, my back feeling like the skin was being peeled off. I don't remember anything after that. I must have been knocked out."
"Shit." Charles shook his head. "Kyle?"
"He didn't make it. I woke up in the hospital over a week later. They had put me in an induced coma while they dealt with my burns. I guess for the first few days, my parents weren't even sure I'd wake up. I was in and out of consciousness for days. When I finally woke up enough to understand what was going on, I learned that Kyle had died.
